City One Minutes - Bangalore

June 27th, 2009

See the personal impressions of city life which artists across the globe have filmed. Follow what happens from hour to hour in more than hundred cities on cityoneminutes.org. In City One Minutes life in each city is divided into 24 one minute portraits, each depicting one hour of the day.  Every film is a personal impression of the city in which the artist lives or in which he is staying.

This week I worked in collaboration with video artist Smriti Mehra on 2 one minute film sketches of Bangalore for the cityoneminutes.org project. The first we shot at Bangalore’s flower market between 6am and 7am. The second at a lithographic printers near Majestic between 3pm and 4pm.

Smriti chose the flower market as a video sketch for a longer film she is making as an artist in residence at Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology. I chose the lithographic printers, to film this working space that contributes largely to the visual culture of the city through its continuous production and distribution of local language film posters, seen on walls, vans and skips across the city. The one minute lithographic film can be seen below. Photographs of these posters in context can be seen on my site.

The Bangalore series of films by all the artists that participated will be viewable online at cityoneminutes.org in the next few weeks.

Thanks to Selby Gildemacher from the Art Group Piek! And Zack Denfield for getting this project to happen in Bangalore.
