Kolams
August 2nd, 2009
These photographs of Kolam designs are from a series I have been photographing over the past few months in the area around my street in Yelahanka, Bangalore.
A common sight on South Indian suburban streets, Kolams are made with rice powder. Drawn outside the entrance, they are thought to bestow prosperity on the home. The symmetrical patterns range in both size and complexity and often seem to represent status. (The bigger the home the larger and more complex the Kolam). Exposed to the elements, fresh Kolams are drawn every morning, usually by the women or maids of the household.
